After years of uncertainty and delays, the Natural State will see medical marijuana officially for sale on May 12, 2019.
The source of the medical marijuana set to go on sale in mid-May will come from just one cultivator – Bold Team out of Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Bold Team expects to have 200 pounds of dried and cured product from this first harvest, which will be harvested in a few days. As Bold Team begins its harvest, the final decision on the first operational dispensary will be made. However, from all indications, Doctor’s Orders RX in Hot Springs will receive the official final nod of approval in just two weeks, at which point, it will be the sole dispensary to have marijuana for consumers on or just after, May 12, 2019.
It is expected that, just as happened in Las Vegas, Nevada, medical marijuana will be sold out on “opening day.” As only two other cultivators, aside from Bold Team, currently have marijuana plants growing, the next harvest will likely occur in early summer, and will presumably result in a larger amount of medical marijuana product, as it will come from two to three cultivation centers rather than just one. It is also likely that more dispensaries will be open when the next crops are harvested.
There are currently 10,500 Arkansas residents with medical marijuana cards. It is estimated that the number of licensed users will significantly increase to 40,000 after medical marijuana starts selling on May 12, 2019.
As the first crop of medical marijuana is about to be harvested, and the first dispensary is about to open its doors to the public, it is imperative that employers train their employees on recognizing the signs of marijuana impairment and update the company’s substance abuse policy to address medical marijuana.
